Masseria Cuturi 1881 – Centuries of heritage, vines that tell the story of Manduria

  • Hectares / Altitude: 98 acres / 164 feet above sea level
  • Grape varieties: Primitivo, Negroamaro, and Fiano Minutolo
  • Established: 1881
  • Region: Italy, Apulia
  • Appellation: Primitivo di Manduria DOC, Salento IGT

In 1881, the Countess Sabini of Altamura brought as her dowry “barbatelle” (rooted cuttings) of Primitivo when she married Don Tommaso Schiavoni-Tafuri. These cuttings were planted in the fertile land of Cuturi, marking the beginning of Primitivo’s cultivation in Manduria. The resulting wine was more alcoholic and full-bodied than other Apulian wines, earning it the nickname “nectar of the Gods.”

Today, Masseria Cuturi 1881 spans approximately 741 acres, with 104 acres dedicated to vineyards planted with native grape varieties including Primitivo, Negroamaro, Aglianico, and Minutolo. The estate also features 500-year-old olive trees, 18th-century farm structures, and ancient archaeological relics, including megalithic walls and sacred sites from the Messapian civilization.

Acquired by the Rossi Chauvenet family in 2008, the estate has been revitalized to produce high-quality, monovarietal wines that honor the legacy of Primitivo. Each wine reflects the unique terroir of the region, combining centuries of tradition with modern winemaking techniques.
